THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Created in 1945, this authority is constituted by 15 distinguished members of the University community. They are designated by the University Council, or the Board itself. It has the right to appoint the Rector, deans of schools, institutes, colleges, and the members of the University Properties. All the members integrating the Board of Governors must be Mexican by birth, older than 35 years and younger than 70 years, must hold a university degree, noted in their respective fields, have been professor or researcher at UNAM, or be interested in university issues, and be recognized among the community as an honorable and prudent person.

The Organic Law establishes that the members appointed to the Board have an honorary post. The University Council should appoint a member annually, who will replace the oldest designation.

The Board of Governors holds ordinary sessions once a month, or whenever it is summoned by its president, the Rector, or by five of its members. A session can begin if more than the half of the members attend, and decisions are taken by absolute majority, except for situations such as the Director election, when the session requires a qualified majority of 10 votes; or the appointment of the deans of schools, and institutes, which requires a majority of 8 votes.

Traditionally, the Board of Governors has included the most important academic figures in Mexico, coming from different areas of knowledge, It is worthwhile to remember, as an example, that the first Board was the seats of Jesús Silva Herzog, Mario de la Cueva, Mario Hernández, José Torres Torija, Manuel Gómez Morín, Ricardo Caturegli, Manuel Sandoval Vallarta, Antonio Martínez Báez, Alejandro Quijano, Ignacio Chávez, Alfonso Reyes, Gabino Fraga, Abraham González Ayala, Fernando Ocaranza and Federico Mariscal.
