The Director is the University's legal representative, its natural leader, and president of the University Council. He is appointed by the Board of Governors for a period of four years, with the possibility of being reelected for only one more term. Any Director candidate is required to be born in Mexico, to be older than 35 years and younger than 70 years, to hold a university degree, to have been working for at least 10 years as a professor or researcher in the University, to be noted in their respective fields, and to be recognized among the community as a honorable and prudent person.
The Rector's central role is to oversee the enforcement of the Organic Law, the decisions of the Board of Governors, the resolutions of the University Council. It is his responsibility to propose the three candidates to be chosen by the Board of Governors as deans of schools, institutes, colleges and to appoint the center director after determining the community's opinion about those candidates. Also he has to exercise the government duties over the institution in all other matters not reserved for the Board of Properties, and to keep a vigil over the strict fulfillment of the norms and regulations for conducting institutional life, with special concern and emphasis on constant academic work.
